About Coil

In 2008 Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl released Coil. This indie title offers an offbeat puzzle adventure with minimal guidance. Players click and drag to explore. The design strips away any menus or scores. It invites exploration right from the start.

Each stage shows a different step in biological growth. One level starts with fertilization. Another splits and expands cells. No instructions ever appear. Players learn through trial and plain interaction.

Sparse text fragments appear between levels. Those lines focus on existence and loss with poetic hints. Abstract visuals pair with a soft soundtrack. No heads-up display or tutorials interfere. Its short run ends in under an hour and it won the innovation award at the 2008 Independent Games Festival.
