About Atari Centipede

Atari Centipede is a classic arcade game from 1980, developed by Atari, but this is a modern adaptation. In this fixed shooter game, players control a small bug blaster at the bottom of the screen, shooting darts at a segmented centipede that winds down from the top. The centipede moves horizontally, changing direction whenever it hits a mushroom or the edge of the screen, and each segment turns into a mushroom when shot.

The objective is to destroy the centipede and other enemies like spiders, scorpions, and fleas. The game becomes progressively challenging as the screen fills with mushrooms, making it harder to shoot the centipede before it reaches the bottom. The game was particularly notable for its vibrant graphics and the use of a trackball for controls, which was quite innovative at the time.

Centipede was a huge success and became one of the top-grossing arcade games of its time. It was also significant for having a substantial female player base, thanks to its colorful design and engaging gameplay.
